Beautiful antique Italian olive wood cockade fan mirror, commonly associated with Sorrento ware and likely dating to the late 19th century, circa 1880.
This unusual piece features a shaped olive wood case with an inset oval mirror and a pull-out circular cockade fan. When opened, the fan forms a striking round display with ornate decoration, floral panels, scrollwork, and a delicate lace-style outer trim. When closed, it becomes a slim decorative handheld mirror with a warm olive wood finish.
These pieces are often known as Ricordo souvenir cockade fans, with “Ricordo” meaning remembrance or souvenir in Italian. It has a lovely Victorian-era character and would make a beautiful collector’s item, dressing table accessory, decorative wall piece, or addition to an antique fan collection.
The piece has gentle age-related wear, including light marks to the olive wood, some age spotting to the mirror, and light fading/discolouration to the fan, consistent with its age. It still displays beautifully and has a charming antique appearance.
